Who doesn’t know the feeling when you are ready to go to sleep but once you are actually in bed you just can’t switch off. Or when you get home on a Friday afternoon, ready for the weekend, but you just can’t stop thinking about work? It’s just the worst, isn’t it?! After dealing with these problems for quite a while now I realized that giving yourself some me time before you go to bed or even to welcome the weekend is super important. Obviously you can’t just expect your brain to immediately switch off after you’ve looked at twenty puppy videos on Instagram at night (which is what I seem to do on the regular these days – haha) or when you just got out of a stressful meeting. So today I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite tips on how to relax, so here goes:
Getting in the zone: Which means completely switching off! I know this is much easier said than done and it’s super tempting to just scroll through your Instagram feed for endless hours. But trust me, putting all electronic devices aside will make you feel much more relaxed. And if you really want to calm down try putting your phone on flight or sleep mode, that way you wont even realize when someone sends you a text.
Take a bath: Now I’m not really a bath person so if you are like me this tip wont be for you – so skip right ahead – but if you are, continue reading. According to my friends and family who love taking a bath, they fix everything. They make you feel super calm and relaxed and you can completely customize it to your desires. You can buy a fancy bath bomb/oil, light some candles, turn on some calming music and turn it into your perfect escape.
Do something you love: If you don’t like taking a bath just do something else you love. Listen to music, read a book, bake a cake, go for a walk or even a run. It really doesn’t matter what you do as long as you do something that’s not part of your daily routine. I’m kind of a sports person these days and I love dancing so if I want to switch off I usually go to a class or try and do some routines at home. It really calms me down.
Get a journal to write down your thoughts: If there is something that really bugs you or occupies you mind I’d say write it down. There is nothing worse than trying to relax with your brain working a thousand miles an hour. So just get journal or a piece of paper and write it down. You’ll feel much lighter afterwards.
Pamper yourself: Who doesn’t love a good face mask! I do this once a week anyways but if you don’t I’d suggest getting a good face mask (or making one yourself!) that includes the things you are looking for and applying it to your face. For the ultimate spa feel you could even combine this with taking a bath and lighting some candles. If you don’t like face masks you could also just put in some time and effort when cleansing your skin at night. Giving it a deep cleanse before you go to sleep will make you feel much better in the morning!
